Welcome Back to School, Tuesday 5 September 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome back to the final term of 2017. The last term of the year often brings excitement as we enter Spring and the final events of the year begin to unfold. The third term is also hopefully a time of reflection for the children as they look back at the goals they have achieved or are close to achieving. Perhaps it is necessary for your child to adjust their goals and make them a little more realistic or achievable. It would be a big motivator for 2018 if your child could turn to you in December and say, “Look what I achieved this year” and by achievement we mean anything that gets them to become more independent or move forward: carrying their own bag to class, making their own lunch for school, the scary act of public speaking, reading their first novel or making progress in a particular learning area. One of the best gifts we can give our children is to become stronger, resilient, independent individuals.

A special welcome to our new children joining us this term as well as:

  • Ms Bronwen Kockott who will be teaching LO for Grades Four and Five and Drama for Grades Four to Six as a locum teacher, as Mrs White takes on the Grade Six English teaching and 6A class. Ms Kockott is an experienced English and LO teacher having worked at Eden College, Buccleuch Primary School and BrightSparkz Tutoring. Grade Seven Drama will be incorporated into the Grade Seven English lessons with Mr Hayter.
  • Mrs Vanessa Savary joins the Maths department as a Grade Six Maths teacher this term and then as Head of Maths and Grade Seven Maths in 2018. Mrs Savary joins us from The King’s College and Prep School. She has taught both in Durban and Johannesburg and brings close on 20 years of experience to our Maths department.
  • Mrs Lilian Figueiredo who takes on the Music for Mrs Ruth Buck while she is away on maternity leave. Mrs Figueiredo is already well known to most parents as she has filled in for Mrs Buck in previous years.

We are also happy to announce the following staff positions for 2018:

  • Mrs Clare Vandeyar has been made Head of English and will also be teaching Grade Seven English. Mrs Candice Kinnear will be taking over from Mrs Vandeyar as the Grade Four English teacher and Mrs Aimee Howard will be moving to Grade Two.
  • Miss Nelisiwe Phakathi has been appointed as the new Grade Four to Six isiZulu teacher. Miss Phakathi joins us from St Mary’s School as an experienced isiZulu teacher who is busy completing her MEd (Educational Technology) at WITS University.
