Senior Prep Notices 24 March 2017

Camps: This is a reminder to all parents that the children and teachers will be away on camps next week. Grades 5, 6 and 7 children will be away from Tuesday 28 to Friday 31 March (inclusive). Parents are to ensure that the children are at school half an hour before the time of departure. The buses will leave at the following times:

Grade 7: bus departs @ 06:45

Grade 6: bus departs @ 07:15

Grade 5: bus departs @ 07:45

The Grade 4 children will depart for camp on Wednesday 29 March @ 07:00 and return on Friday 31 March. The school will send out an sms notifying parents once the children and teachers have arrived at their destination. Please DO NOT phone the school or the camp unless it is an emergency.

Head of School: Please note that Mrs Ché McKay and Mr Dumisani Kunene will be on camp with the Grade 7 learners for the period, 28 March to 31 March. Please direct any communication to Ms Lynda Johnson during this time.

Media Centre: We currently have several exciting displays in the library. Criminally Good Books and Books are better than gold. Also on display is the Human Rights Display as well as our Current Affairs Board. We also have a “thunk” board. This board asks questions to make your brain go ouch!

Parent Consultations: Parent consultations will be held on Wednesday 5 April from 16:00 to 19:00. This is an opportunity for parents to come and meet with various teachers to discuss your child’s progress. Since we’ve changed our reporting structure this year, the meetings will focus more on general progress rather than on marks. Teachers will also give you feedback on the areas that will need attention in the second term. The venues for the parent consultations will be as follows:

  • Grade 4 and 5 teachers will be in the hall
  • Grade 6 and 7 teachers will be in the Library
  • Mrs O’Flaherty (Art and Grade 6 History) will be in the hall
  • Mrs Schoeman (Grade 4-7 Music) will be in the hall
  • Mr Tsotetsi (Grade 4-6 Zulu) will also be in the hall and so will the Sports Department staff.

The consultations work on a ‘first come first serve’ basis, however, parents must please ensure that they keep to the usual 10 minute slot with each teacher and then move on to allow other parents the opportunity to see the same teacher.

Open Morning: The Open Morning for Grades 4-7 parents will take place on Friday 7 April from 07:30 until 09:30. The day will begin with assembly in the hall and parents can then attend lessons with the children. A special timetable has been drawn up for that morning and we look forward to seeing many of you attending classes with the children.

Grade 6 and 7 Ad Futura Awards: These awards will be handed out during a Senior Prep assembly on Wednesday, 12 April at 07:30. All parents are welcome to attend.

Holiday Care: Holiday care will be closed on Friday, 28 April 2017.

Interhouse Softball: Please note that the Grayston interhouse softball will take place on Monday, 27 March  starting at 13h50 – 15h00.

Thinking Week: The school will host a series of five, one-day workshops that, if taken together, provide an introduction to both the concept of the ‘Thinking School,’ and the essential elements within it. Each of the workshops also stands alone. A ‘Thinking School’ is one within which the further development of a student’s capacities as an independent, self-managing and reflective learner drive both teaching and pedagogy. Parents and teachers are invited to attend. Teresa Williams, an International Thinking Schools Facilitator, will be our guest speaker.
