Pre Prep Notices 15 September 2017

2018 January Start Date
Just a reminder that our calendar does not fall completely in line with the ISASA schools calendar. We have decided to start the April holiday a little earlier than the ISASA schools calendar, to allow for a full 3 weeks’ break in April 2018.

In order to make up the school days that are lost during April, we will return to school two days earlier in January 2018. Therefore school will commence on Monday, 15 January 2018 and close on Friday, 6 April 2018.

ISASA Head’s Conference
Please note that Mrs Ché McKay will be away at the ISASA Head’s conference and International Confederation of Principals conference for the period, 20 to 26 September 2017.

Proudly South African
Grayston will celebrate Heritage Day on Friday, 22 September 2017. The children are invited to come to school dressed in any of the colours represented in our South African flag – red, white, green, blue, yellow and black or in any South African traditional dress.

Greeting Cards
Please complete the order form by Friday, 29 September 2017 if you would  like to order the Anytime Greeting Cards or Calendar. Only those who have completed the order form will receive, and be billed for, their printed cards. Please complete a separate order form for each child. The cost of your order will be billed to your Grayston account. Please click here for the order form.

Movie Night and Camp Out
This year’s Movie Night and Camp Out will take place on Saturday, 7 October 2017. The day will consist of the traditional camp out on the top field and a big screen movie. We request that parents bring a picnic type meal and enjoy the evening watching the movie on the field with their family and friends, and then a night of camping for those who wish to do so. Parents will be expected to supervise their children at all times. (No drop and go). The cost for the movie night and camp out is R50 per person. Please note that no braais or gas fires will be allowed. Popcorn, boerewors rolls and soft drinks will be on sale as part of the Grade Seven fundraising effort.

Parking for those who are camping will be available on the bottom fields from 14:30on the day. Campers are welcome to unpack their vehicles on the top field before moving to the designated parking area on the bottom field. No vehicles will be allowed on the top field after 15:30. We look forward to enjoying the afternoon and evening together.

Congratulations to Ruth and David Buck on the birth of their little boy, Spencer.

The Grade Sevens are selling “Design your own Flip Flops” over the next few weeks. The cost of the sandals is R120 and you can create your own designs. Forms are available from Mrs Scriven or you can get a copy from the uniform shop. It’s hip to wears slops!

Mrs Scriven is collecting empty 5 litre water bottles. Should you have any please bring them to school and leave in her classroom (Room 5), which is on the first floor of the Senior Prep Block.

Co-curricular Activities
Please finalise your children’s involvement in the various co-curricular activities for the term and remember to inform the class teacher of any changes to their schedules.

Thank You
We extend our sincere thanks to Gerhard and Vic Campher of Volvo – Tom Campher Motors in Auckland Park and their Tiger Wheels and Tyres branch as well as Tiger Wheels SA for their donation of used tyres for our Pre Prep playground. The children will make very good use of these tyres for climbing, building, rolling and a myriad of activities! Thank you, too, to Charles Davis, one of our parents, for his efforts in organising the donation.

Anti-waste Materials
Please send in any anti-waste items you may have at home – toilet roll innards, cereal boxes, egg boxes and so on are most useful for craft and construction. These can be delivered to the Grade R classrooms.

Urgent Help Needed
Grade RA and Grade RB are in urgent help for the weekly ‘puzzles and games’ sessions. If there are any parents who are able to assist in this regard, please pop in and chat to either Mrs Nicholson or Mrs Georgiadis.

Grade 000
The theme of Life in the Garden continues next week.
This week, the children applied the spreading skills they have been learning and made some delicious, sticky jam sandwiches!

Grade 00
Our next theme is Children Around South Africa.
The first Grade 00A ‘puzzles and games’ session for the term will be on Friday, 15 September 2017 at 07:30.
The children had great fun using their spreading skills to make some scrumptious jam sandwiches.

Jam Sandwiches
Ingredients: Bread, jam and plastic knives
Method: Each child gets a bowl with jam, half slice of bread and a knife. Children dip their knives into the jam and spread it on the bread. Eat and enjoy.

Grade R
The theme of Nursery Rhymes wil continue next week.
We will introduce the letter Tt next week. Please encourage the children to bring items for ‘show and tell’ which have this letter in their names.
This week the children made potato salad – see recipe below.
Our bakers for Monday, 18 September 2017 are Shivan Moodley, Troy Navetta and Giorge Natsas.

Potato Salad
Ingredients: ½ a potato for each child – peeled, peas, 3 tablespoon of mayonnaise, ½ teaspoon white vinegar (if desired), salt, pepper
Method: Children are to first peel their own potatoes. Place potatoes in 3-quart saucepan; add enough water to cover potatoes. Cover and heat to boiling; reduce heat to low. Cook covered 25 to 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender; drain the water. Let stand until cool enough to handle. Cut potatoes into cubes. Mix mayonnaise, vinegar, salt and pepper in large glass or plastic bowl. Add potatoes and peas. Enjoy!
