Afrikaans and Zulu (FAL)

Afrikaans and Zulu are the First Additional Languages at Grayston. They are introduced in Grade One and, in the Junior Prep, the approach is purely oral with children learning vocabulary and basic sentence structures incrementally through the phase. Reading of simple high frequency words begins in Grade Three. From Grade Four children begin to read the language formally and writing is introduced for the first time. The emphasis is on communication and so vocabulary and sentence structures continue to receive attention while reading and writing skills develop incrementally.
